Many would not be wrong to mistake the life of Serena van der Woodsen in the popular series Gossip Girl to be the one lived by her real life star Blake Lively, in fact many still refer to the blonde beauty by her on screen character name in the series. At only 23 years old Lively is one of the youngest and wealthiest celebrities in Hollywood and her double roles as an actress as a model have served to give her great fame in the short time that she has had a professional presence. Lively’s roots go back to the film capital of Los Angeles, California, USA where she was born on August 25 1987 Elaine and Ernie Lively.
No stranger to show business, Lively was raised by parents who already had established careers in acting, her kin too was involved actively in the art thus providing an unavoidable environment for young Lively to develop a shared interest in her family’s tradition. Lively may have as well grown up on film sets as Elaine and Ernie did not leave their daughter behind as they went for their filming jobs, this created an advantageous exposure for the young girl as she got to see first-hand how the film industry was run and she also got to meet actors and actresses that would be her mentors.
Despite Lively’s parents ‘dream for her to follow in their footsteps she initially resisted instead opting to join a singing group at the Burbank High School in Burbank where she attended high school. In her late teens Lively became more open to the idea of acting and she took up a debut role as Bridget Vreeland in the 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, this was an eye opener for Lively as she found out that the stage was not that much of a bad place. Besides her earlier exposure to the industry proved advantageous with her role raising praise from film critics, this film was later continued and Lively reprised her role in 2008 in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.
Her next film role was in 2007 with the film Elvis and Anabelle, Lively played the lead character Anabelle and this time her performance did not go unnoticed as she was offered yet another lead role in a high profile teen series titled Gossip Girl in the same year. In the show Lively played Serena van der Woodsen, a rich teen living in an upper class neighbourhood and juggling a busy social life, drug addiction, a boyfriend from a lower class and a hate-love relationship with an equally rich best friend.
Gossip Girl remains Lively’s most successful production yet and the series is one of the most watched by teens around the world, it has been airing from 2007 to date with Lively still in the lead role.
For her role as Serena in Gossip Girl Lively received nominations in the People's Choice Award, the Teen Choice Awards and the Prism Awards all between 2009 and 2011 for the Best Actress in a drama series. For her performance she won the Choice TV Actress Drama at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards.
