Catherine Zeta Jones Biography
Performing came naturally to Catherine Zeta Jones from the time she was young and the need to be on the world’s top stages has always been at the back of her mind, it was something she had vowed to achieve, and she did. Born to low income earners David James Jones and Patricia Fair on September 25 1969, she spent her first years in her birth town of Swansea in Wales, UK. Fortunes changed with the coming of a cash reward and life for the young girl’s family became comfortable and they moved to the top of the economic class.
Jones underwent a prestigious academic life as she was enrolled at the Dumbarton House School and The Arts Educational Schools in Chiswick, West London where she majored in musical theatre. She was an excellent student, often at the top of her class but despite this she was more interested in the school’s drama club where her favourite activities were singing and dancing. Outside school Jones was a frequent performer at family events and in the church she was part of the choir from the young age of five, seeing their daughter’s interest in the art Patricia Fair and David Jones granted her permission to join a touring church band that travelled all over Wales giving performances to church concerts.
The Catholic Touring Troupe became popular in the 70’s and Jones was spotted by a producer who approached her parents with a deal to manage their Jones’ music career. Jones got her first professional stint in theatre in the 1986 musical production Annie, her career followed with other Broadway acts and by 17 she had made performances in theatres and Opera houses all over Europe.
In the 90’s decade Jones ventured into a singing career releasing singles like ‘True Love Ways’, ‘I Can’t Help Myself’, ‘In the Arms of Love’ and ‘For All Time’. Meanwhile she had moved from theatre and was casting for various film roles, in 1994 she had her first breakthrough in The Return of the Native, her previous stage presence proved advantageous and more roles came in the series Catherine the Great, Splitting Heirs, The Phantom in 1996 and the series Titanic in 1997.
Her career opener was the role of Elena de La Vega, alongside actor Antonio Banderas in the 1998 film titled The Mask of Zorro, this production became one of the top releases for the year and went on to gross millions of dollars in the UK and American box offices. Fans went wild as the beautiful Jones was paired with the captivating looks of Banderas to produce a chemistry that was evident in the film and formed part of the success of this production. Jones was honoured with a Best Actress Award at the 1998 European Film Awards and received nominations for the same award at the Empire and at the Saturn Awards.
Other film credits by the actress include Ocean’s Twelve in 2004 where she played Isabel Lahiri, The Terminal, Death Defying Acts, No Reservations, The Rebound, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas and Intolerable Cruelty.
She has been voted on numerous occasions as one of the sexiest women alive by tabloids like FHM Magazine, Vanity Fair, Harper’s Bazaar, Allure and People Magazine.
For her roles in entertainment Jones was awarded with the Order of the British Empire, OBE by the Queen of England in her 2010 Birthday Honours list.
