Charlotte Church Biography
Classical music sensation Charlotte Maria Reed was born in Llandaff, Cardiff, Wales to Maria and Steven Reed on February 21 1986. She later adopted the stage name Charlotte Church. She ventured into showbiz first as an actress in theatres and in school and camp productions. She was so dedicated that when kids her age were asking for Barbie dolls and candy all she asked for was a chance to be on stage and throughout elementary school she ‘lived’ on the stage.
At the Howell’s School Llandaff in Cardiff and at her previous The Cathedral School, also in Llandaff she was often in trouble with teachers for sneaking out of classes to go and just stare blindly inside the school theatre. Surprisingly the little girl was able to equally succeed on the stage as well as in class. Despite her large involvement in acting, Church became famous on television, at first as a singer. Under Sony Records she debuted with an album titled ‘Voice of an Angel’, the teen album was an instant success and the lyrical content, some co-written by the star, was greatly praised. The album was rated multi-platinum by the British Phonographic Industry.
An equally successful album was released by the singer in the year 1999 at it went on the market as ‘Charlotte Church’, early 2000 saw the release of singles like ‘Sleigh Ride’ from her ‘Dream a Dream’ Christmas album.
The singer has worked tirelessly with the Topsy Foundation, a foundation that goes around the world raising awareness on the dangers of AIDS and also provides opportunities for victims of the pandemic to communicate with others around the world who share the same fate. Topsy Foundation provides a platform for exchange of ideas and provides funds for the economic development of people in countries like South Africa, India and Bolivia.
Controversies surrounding the actress have been more than many she has been accused of having an air of British arrogance due to her uncouth comments and outbursts on fellow celebrities. Her responses on television interviews have had to be bleeped for the sake of the viewers. She once went on record for insulting Queen Elizabeth II and calling her an old woman who had no idea on why she was in power.
Church has also had problems with smoking a habit she insists is inherited in her family and therefore cannot be dropped. This absurd thinking has served to her detriment as her once angelic voice is hoarse and the effects have been translated into poor album sales.
The songstress has long battled with her weight especially after the birth of her children. Church has been criticised for letting go of her image as she is now a pale reflection of her earlier sex figure.
Some of her albums include ‘Enchantment’, ‘Tissues and Issues’ and ‘Back to Scratch’ which was her latest release of 2010.
Church loves writing and she has written and published two autobiographies titled Keep Smiling and Voice of an Angel, My Life.
