Colin Firth Biography

As a Golden Globe winner and part of the group behind the successful Mama Mia! and Pride and Prejudice films, Colin Andrew Firth remains one of the best acts that have been witnessed in box offices around the world. In a career that has been in existence since 1983, he continues to entertain audiences under the stage name Colin Firth.

Firth was born on September 10 1960 in Grayshott, Hampshire, UK to David Norman Lewis Firth and Shirley Jean Rolles. His academic history can be traced to Montgomery of Alamein Secondary School in St. Louis, Missouri and the Drama Centre London where he concentrated on acting. The early life of Firth was unlike that of his peers since he grew up in a home where education was given the utmost priority and the only thing that could come before that was religion.

Part of his childhood was spent in Nigeria, England, and the US as both his parents tried to combine their teaching careers with their missionary work. Firth’s parents insisted on the following of these two principles and they expected nothing short of good grades at school and an active faith in church from their children. The strong beliefs meant that Firth had to endure a conservative childhood that did not only make him stand out from his peers but it also made him the topic of ridicule.

On reaching teenage hood Firth decided to become his own person and he rebelled against his parents by quitting school and adopting a wild dress code of bright clothes and shaggy hair. Religion was put at the back of Firth’s mind as he sought out to pursue interests in acting and playing the guitar. In the early 80’s he moved to London, joined the National Youth Theatre and begun performing in plays that were organised by the centre.

Following a successful run in theatre, Firth sought to make a name on screens and he begun to audition for roles. He still adopted the rugged look and for many producers it was a put off but for others, the young man was different and he held the capacity to stand out in a film. This view led to Firth taking part in his debut film in 1984, titled Another Country. This was followed by another film in the same year, this was titled Camille.

Firth’s career grew on in the 80’s to include more films like 1919, Dutch Girls, Lost Empires, Month in the Country, Pat Hobby:Teamed With Genius, and Secret Garden. In the 1990’s Firth took up roles in the films Femme Fatale, Wings of Fame, Out of the Blue, Hostages, The Hour of the Pig, Master of the Moor, Playmaker, Pride and Prejudice, and Shakespeare in Love.

2000’s film credits by Firth include Bridget Jones's Diary, Relative Values, Conspiracy, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Importance of Being Earnest, Girl with a Pearl Earring, We Know Where You Live, What a Girl Wants, and Love Actually.

In 2009, Firth was cast in the popular film titled St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold and in 2010 he appeared on yet another high profile production titled The King's Speech.
