When Maria Dolores dos Santos and Jose Diniz Aveiro had their son on February 5 1985 in Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal, they named him Christiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro. Little did they know that Christiano Ronaldo would become a household name in football. The football star came from a humble beginning in a little unknown village to becoming a respected name in football. His is a story of from rags to riches. He was known in his small island village for his skills with the ball. Word of a talented young footballer went around and even big European teams like Liverpool, Manchester United and Juventus were sending talent scouts to pick the star.
However, Ronaldo’s road to stardom did not immediately begin with the big leagues of the football world. He started playing for small teams in his home island before graduating to other Portuguese teams before he finally landed in Manchester, England to play for Manchester United. He later replaced David Beckham as the team’s striker. On signing with the team he became the highest paid teen footballer.
With Ronaldo on the team Manchester United went on to win the Champions League and the FA Cup. His goal scoring and winning streak went on for all the seasons that he was in Manchester United. Ronaldo was and is still one of the most searched football celebrities on the internet.
He has won the Fan Player of the Year, Portuguese Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year Awards among others. Ronaldo was also a nominee for the FIFA Footballer of the Year Award in 2007. In 2009 he won the award.
He played for Sporting Lisbon before joining Manchester United. Ronaldo played for his first team called Andorinha when he was eight before moving to Nacional when he was twelve years old. He also played for a Portuguese football team called Sporting PC in 1997. He almost stopped playing football after a scare with a heart complication.
Amid controversy, the player moved to Real Madrid in 2009. His move caused anger within the Manchester United fan base and most people thought he was a spoilt brat who wanted to be begged to stay on the team. on the other hand his reception at Real Madrid was compared to big names in football like Diego Maradona. Thousands showed up for his unveiling ceremony and millions more watched the proceedings on Live television.
Ronaldo hopes to be a football legend just like Diego Maradona. He also admires Thierry Henry and Luis Figo. He loves Portuguese food and one of his favourite pastimes is watching movies and cooking. Ronaldo is a father of one and is currently a winger for Real Madrid. The move to the Spanish side made him the highest earning footballer and was the most expensive transfer in football history. Ronaldo has been a giver and has donated to tsunami victims around the world. He has three siblings, Emma, Hugo and Liliana.
He participated in the 2006 World Cup in the Portugal team and was also present in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa although his performance in the cup was lacking
