Eddie Izzard Biography
Television and film star Eddie John Izzard, stage name Eddie Izzard has his roots in Colony of Aden, Aden Protectorate, Yemen where he was born on February 7 1962. He was schooled at the St John's School in Porthcawl, the St. Bede's Preparatory School, Eastbourne College before enrolling for an accounts major at the University of Sheffield in South Wales.
When Eddie was young his family went through a series of difficulties after his mother, Dorothy Ella succumbed to cancer when he was just eight years old. Life with a single parent was hard since Eddie’s father, Harold John Izzard was always away at work and he was often left in the care of his older siblings. They had to be parents to each other, doing chores together and making sure that the roles previously undertaken by their mother around the house were taken care of.
To top it off Eddie had no friends and he grew up mostly relating with his siblings, the reason for this was that his father’s busy schedule as an accountant to a large farm meant that he had to move from one branch to another to oversee the finances. His postings would at times be months long so Eddie barely made friends as he was constantly uprooted from one home to the next.
This life was hard for the Izzard family and Eddie often found himself trying to cheer on his siblings with comical jokes and a sense of humour. This is how his interest in stand-up comedy begun, Eddie extended his performances from just his siblings to neighbourhood events and entertainment spots in his home town.
In 1987 Eddie had his first and best gig yet at the time by appearing at the Edinburgh Festival and also the The Comedy Store in London, his dry humour and freshness at these events were greatly applauded and demands for him to perform in other events begun to trickle in. His main audiences from then on comprised of political campaigners and mainly organisers of charity and awareness campaigns. Eddie became a regular face at campaigns for various causes organised by a stand-up comedy group called Filth.
Eddie continued with live stand-up comedy until the end of the 90’s decade when he decided to venture into television, a reason for this was cited as the dwindling numbers of his audiences after his live performances begun to lack his earlier freshness.
A new career in acting begun in 2006 with Eddie’s appearance in ‘The Riches’ as lead role Wayne Malloy. The series became one of the most watched in U.K television and with high reviews and an audience that identified with his new career, Eddie’s star began to shine again.
Stand-up acts by the actor before this new breakthrough were in ‘the Cryptogram’, ‘Stage 900’, ‘Definite Article’, ‘Unrepeatable’, ‘Stripped’, ‘Sexie’, ‘Dress to Kill’, ‘Circle’ and many more.
After making a name in film Eddie went on to appear in ‘The Criminal’, ‘Circus’, ‘The Cat’s Meow’, ‘All the Queen’s Men’ and ‘Secret Agent’.
In 2009 Eddie starred in an auto biography film titled ‘Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story’ and in the same year he featured in the films ‘Every Day’ and ‘Rage’. His roles in these 2009 films established him as an even greater success than seen before.
