Gerard Butler Biography
Edward Butler, now deceased, and Margaret Butler bore their first child on November 13 1969 in Paisley, Scotland, UK and named him Gerald James Butler. Gerald Butler, as he would be famously known was not raised in one place for too long as his father moved the family from city to city in the name of searching for work. His father was never involved in the family unless it was to cause pain and heartache. He finally abandoned the family on realising he could not handle his responsibilities as a father and as a wife.
Butler was forced to grow up in an environment characterised by hopelessness and he vowed that on growing up he would be nothing like his father, and as it turned out he did not. Butler was the perfect child, well-mannered and a competent student. He was drawn to acting but never had a chance to nurture the talent as his single mother and family had set sights on having a lawyer in the family and Butler being the eldest the responsibility fell on him to turn the dram into reality.
Although bored and lacking interest in legal matters he pursued a law degree at the Glasgow University and stayed at the top of his class until he graduated with honours. A short stint in a law firm and Butler was ready to give up the family dream for his own dream. He took up classes at the Scottish Youth Theatre where his talent was polished through numerous school plays like Oliver.
Outside school he attended casting calls for films and in 1997 he was picked for a role and he immediately began filming for ‘Mrs. Brown’. In the same year he appeared in the film ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ a role he acted alongside James Bond. His popularity rose with the help of James Bond lovers around the world. The film was shown in almost every country and soon Butler was being compared to James Bond with some saying that he would be the next big acting sensation.
Butler’s other film roles have been in ‘The Shooters’, ‘Atilla’ and the famous ‘Dracula’. His role as King Leonidas in the 2007 hit movie ‘300’ drove the actor’s career up the ladder and he was rumoured to have pocketed millions of dollars from the project. He was also part of the successful sequel title Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of life.
Recent works by the actor have seen him star in the film ‘P.S I Love You’ in 2007 and ‘The Bounty Hunter’ in 2009. He also acted on the ‘Law Abiding Citizen’.
Butler is known for his humble and caring personality and he is unlike the stereotype image of a snobbish celebrity type.
The actor’s commitment to acting has seen him take up odd jobs in London including hawking watches to pedestrians and working as a waiter before he struck it in acting. To support himself he also worked in a band also in London in order to pay his rent. It is this spirit that keeps on winning him more and more roles in films.
