Jojo Biography
Joanna Noklle Blagden Levesque is the star behind the popular ‘Leave, Get Out’ hit single from 2004, she goes by the professional name JoJo and even though she is only 20 her career has been in play for 13 years already starting from 1998.
JoJo was born on December 20 1990 in Brattleboro, Vermont, USA into a musical family that appreciated the sound of legends such as Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. Initially she lived a happy childhood that was no different from the rest of her peers but in 1997 this all changed after a bitter separation of her parents left the young girl in the hands of a jobless and unskilled mother. From then on her mother, Diane Levesque had to not only be both mother and father to JoJo she also had to go out in search for a living.
Being a former housewife and with no job experience to talk of meant that all young JoJo could get at the end of the day was shelter in a shanty apartment that was falling apart and the luxuries of clothing came at the bare minimum if any. To forget all this, JoJo and her mum would spend hours listening to music or singing in the church choir as the young girl held her own make-believe concerts. Seeing her daughter performing, Diane Levesque was quick to notice that she was obviously talented especially for her age. This was no missed by her friends and neighbours and in 1998 at the age of seven JoJo was taken to the Bill Cosby show named Kids Say the Darnedest Things: On the Road in Boston.
There JoJo proved that she was indeed talented and more offers came for her to be part of shows like the Destination Stardom, McDonald's Gospel Fest, America's Most Talented Kids, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. At her mother’s insisting JoJo was never allowed to do more than television interviews until she had finished primary school. In 2001, her moment came when her mother approved a recording contract under Blackground Records and the 12 year old went on to work on a first solo project.
This was released in 2004 under the title JoJo this album featured the lead single ‘Leave, Get Out’ which became an instant hit in the early months of that year. JoJo became a household name with even more top ten singles from the album by the time she turned thirteen the Recording Industry Association of America, RIAA rated the production platinum. Fans of the rising singer grew in numbers daily and JoJo was thrown into a busy schedule that featured a worldwide tour to promote the album and thank her fans.
Since then she has released two more albums with the first, titled The High Road coming in 2006 and the other, titled Jumping Trains coming in 2011.
Besides music, JoJo has appeared in several films and television series including Shark Tale, Developing Sheldon, Aquamarine, True Confessions of a Hollywood Starlet, and RV.
