Kate Winslet Biography
Kate Winslet inherited the film gene from a family that comprised of generations of actors and actresses and her birth could have easily been on the stage since she began to express an interest in film even before she was three. Sally Briges and Roger John Winslet bore their second child on October 5 1975 in Reading , Berkshire, England , U.K and named her Kate Elizabeth Winslet. With no idea that she would be a respected name in Hollywood they raised her just like the rest of her siblings and when Winslet requested for acting classes she was enrolled at the Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead, Berkshire in the hope of polishing on her in-born talent.
Winslet’s first interaction with acting was on the school theatre where she performed in several productions, always emerging as the best out of her peers. Coming from a low-income family Winslet had to contend with being in the theatre school as she could not afford the services of a private manager to promote her to film producers.
She got her debut role at the age of fifteen in the 1991 film titled ‘Dark Season’ and in the same year she appeared as a guest actress on a series called ‘Casualty’. The roles were not highly publicised as they were from low-budget productions so Winslet remained fairly unknown to the public.
Her next role in 1992’s ‘Heavenly Creatures’ was attributed to the part success of the film and the world got to know her as a natural on stage who transformed the characters to life and made the story-line believable. Although a new actress Winslet was honoured with an Empire Award and a Best Actress of the Year award was given by the London Film Critics Circle to honour her appearance in the film. Winslet was paid millions of dollars after the film grosses figures higher than initially expected.
Winslet went on to appear in high profile films like ‘Jude and Hamlet’ in 1996 and ‘Titanic’ also in the same year. The film was her biggest role ever and it saw her play Rose DeWitt Bukater alongside actor Leornado DiCaprio, she was credited as a brilliant part of the film and a genius on stage for making viewers feel like they were actually present in the ship’s sinking. To add onto her two Empire Awards Winslet was given the European Film Award in 2007. During the premiere of Titanic in the U. K box office the film received returns close to 3 million dollars.
Her list of honours includes seven BAFTA nominations and two wins in the same awards, two Academy Award wins out of a total six nominations and seven Golden Globe nominations among many more.
She appeared on the films ‘Reader’, ‘Holiday, The The holiday’, ‘Revolutionary Road’, ‘Match Point’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’.
Winslet has been voted on numerous occasions as one of the sexiest celebrities alive and in 2005 she was featured on People magazine’s most Beautiful People. Despite her sex symbol status on the media and among fans she has been scrutinized and accused of not being able to handle her often fluctuating weight.
