Kelly Rowland Biography

With her claim to fame as a former girl group sensation and now as a solo musician, Kelly Rowland has her career beginnings going back to the days of the legendary Destiny’s Child act. She was part of the four member clique that rocked the 90’s with hits such as ‘Survivor’ and ‘Say My Name’. She was born on February 11 1981 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA after which she was named Kelendria Trene Rowland.

Rowland was born to Christopher Lovett and Doris Rowland Garrison although for many years the public confused her to be biologically related to the Knowles family, of which her fellow singer and group member Beyonci Knowles was part of. The singer, dancer, model and actress derives her last name from Doris Rowland Garrison, her mother although her paternal parent was known. The reason for this was because Rowland’s mother her taken full custody of her and left the family home in order to avoid a marriage that was rocked in violence and numerous incidents of alcohol abuse.

As a young girl Rowland was always inclined to music shows like Talent Search and true to her interest she was also gifted with vocal capabilities that made her the centre of attraction, this would soon turn out to be her walk from a poor household to residing with the already successful Knowles family in 1989, a year later the ten year old stepped into show business.

Her first stint was in the all-girl group Girl's Tyme , later renamed Destiny’s Child, at the time the group was made up of upcoming singers with the aim of concentrating on dance and signing, signed on to The Plant Recording Studio in Northern California the group was mentored under the keen eyes of Mathew and Tina Knowles who also acted as their manager and stylist respectively.

Under Destiny’s Child Rowland took part in talents contests and toured around America where the group’s fame was beginning to rise, it was not until 1997 that the first studio single titled ‘Killing Time’ was released under Columbia Records. The song became an instant hit as the four members were cast into the limelight and were highly praised not only for their looks but also for their vocals and dance moves as well as the organised manner in which Destiny’s Child was managed. This debut act from the album Destiny’s Child performed so well in music charts that it was used as a sound track for the Will Smith film Men In Black.

The Writing's on the Wall followed in 1999 and within months the album was rated multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, RIAA, this featured album by Rowland put her in second place in the group after the lead singer Beyonci Knowles. In 2005 a remake of the top songs by Rowland and the group was released as the third album named #1's, with many of their songs like ‘Cater 2 U’, ‘Soldier’ and ‘Lose My Breath’ coming from the daily on goings of the group Destiny’s Child began to face a period of controversies over its management and in 2006 it was disbanded.
