Lady Sovereign Biography
One would easily think that the ‘tough girl’ personality of British rap artist Lady sovereign would come with an equally tough name as the star, they would have thought wrong because her real name is as ‘girly’ as Louise Amanda Harman. Her roots can be traced to the Wembley neighbourhood of London, England. Although at her mid 20’s, she exudes a strength that is admired just as it is feared by those she encounters. Her parents are Colin Adien and Nichola Wood and they raised Lady in her birth town from December 19 1985 when they welcomed her into the world.
Lady’s childhood comprised hanging out with the toughest crowd of boys, skipping school and listening to hard rock. She never wanted to be identified with her female image and so to cover up the fact she mastered the art of disguise dressing that made her pass for a boy. Lady grew up feeling like she had been born in the wrong body, this gave rise to a depressed and angry teen and her parents’ split and subsequent demise of Nichola Wood was added emotional torture for the young girl.
She enrolled at the Preston Manor High School in 2000 but barely made it to her classes. Lady’s emotional difficulties later evolved to a full blown rebellion often put her in trouble with the school and with her parents and so before she could graduate she was let off from school after it became apparent that her attitude was unlikely to change.
In a twist of fate Lady’s misfortunes became the beginning of a musical career. She put her anger for life on paper and turned her words into rap lyrics. She began to slowly recover through her music and was able to rap in front of audiences. She took on the stage name Lady Sovereign in 2003 just before her debut into television in a rap competition named ‘The Battle’. Meanwhile she was selling her demo singles on the internet and gathering a substantial fan base.
Between 2003 and 2006 Lady was not signed on to a record but she worked on several singles with artists like The Ordinary Boys. ‘Public Warning’ was Lady’s debut studio album produced after a recording deal with Def Jam records in 20006. Hit singles like ‘Hoodie’, ‘Love Me or Hate Me’ and ‘Random’ drove the album up the music charts not only in the US but also in UK. She received a lot of media coverage and interviews on her very direct lyrics that talked of unspoken issues of body image and dieting, the media buzz translated into millions of dollars in album sales.
Her second album titled ‘Jigsaw’ went on air in 2009 and featured the hit song ‘I Got you Dancing’. Lady appeared on Soccer AM in 2009 as well as the in popular reality show Big Brother also in 2009. In the same year she became CEO of Midget Records, her own recording company.
Lady has broken through a cruel rap scene with a fierceness that compares only to fellow female rap guru Missy Elliot.
