Mariah Carey is by far the one most gifted musicians in recent history. The sexy singer has a rare vocal capability and range that has left many unable to mimic. Some say it is because of her early exposure to music since she hails from a musical family and others admit that she has an in-born talent and there is no way anyone can master such talent no matter how long they take. Mariah was born last in a family of three siblings to Alfred Roy Carey and Patricia Carey. The Caribbean- American songstress began her career began as a necessity to survive emotionally through a bitter childhood. Being of an immigrant background she was often a victim of racism and after her mother and father went separate ways she was even more heartbroken.
By age three she had been through more than an average adult had and so to forget her woes, at least temporarily she sang to herself songs that she had written. On one of these occasions Patricia Carey heard her daughter’s vocals and was amazed that at a tender age she could reach such high notes. Patricia began to tutor Mariah on opera hoping that the young talent would follow in her footsteps.
Her high school years at the Harborfields High School in New York were spent between working on her music and working odd jobs in the city to sustain herself since single mother Patricia Carey could barely make ends meet with her job.
Numerous attempts at success in music and she was signed on to Columbia Records in 1990 and her first album ‘Mariah Carey’ came out in 1990 and was soon followed by ‘Emotions’ the songstress’ second studio album in 1992. The multi-platinum albums received substantial airplay and won the artist awards like Best Pop Vocal Performance and Best New Artist.
In 1998 the single ‘When You Believe’ a shared project between the artist and Whitney Houston was released and it did so well that the makers of the film ‘The Prince of Egypt’ asked to used it as a soundtrack on the production. Carey’s voice blended so well with Whitney’s husky voice that works of female artists gained the respect of both critics and fans.
She has worked with upcoming artists like Nikki Minaj and established artists like Gucci Mane and Neyo. Her hit singles include ‘Hero’, ‘Angels Cry’, ‘Dreamlover’ and ‘We Belong Together’. Her albums include Butterfly, Daydream, Rainbow and The Emancipation of Mimi.
Mariah’s marriage to Nick Cannon caused a buzz in the media with claims of her being a cougar for marrying the younger celebrity star were talked about for months. She stood firm on her decision to stay wedded to Cannon and the couple is rumoured to be expecting their first child.
The singer has had numerous confrontations with rap legend Eminem over an apparent affair gone bad. The pair has swung insults to each other through their music and Mariah’s single ‘Obsessed’ was a hard blow on the rapper after the video portrayed his look-alike who ends up crashed by a bus at the end of the video.
She is a self-proclaimed diva and is often blamed for acting like a drama queen.
