Fox was born 09/06/1961 in Canada to parents William Fox and Phyllis Piper. His academic life was spent at the Burnaby Central Secondary School in British Colombia, Canada. Raised by his parents along with one brother and three sisters, Fox had an adventurous life as he was on the move around Canada for most of his life. This was attributed to the fact that his father’s demanding job as a military personnel required for the entire family to move with him in every posting. This was meant to avoid the separation of the family from their father for long periods that would range over months at a time.
For young Fox, the interest in acting was evident from the time he could speak and he often performed in front of his family with his brother and sister taking supporting roles after him. This interest grew on and by the age of 7 Fox was already urging his parents to let him appear in at least one theatre production or television film.
In 1980 and at the age of 18, Fox made his much awaited debut in the entertainment industry with a minor role in the film Midnight Madness. His portrayal of the character named Scott Larson was well received and applauded by critics, seeing this, the producers of an upcoming television series decided to cast Fox in the show. In 1982, Fox appeared for the pilot show of Family Ties. This comedy show became one of the most watched shows at the time with Fox being the main attraction even though he was initially not in the lead role. Fox remained in the series in a recurring role until 1989.
A film career was also building on the side and starting with the 1982 film named Class of 1984, Fox went on to take more roles. Some of his appearances were in Back to the Future, Teen Wolf, Light of Day, The Secret of My Success, Bright Lights, Trouble in High Timber Country, Trapper, and Leo and Me.
On his career as an author, Fox has written three books namely Lucky Man: A Memoir in 2002, Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist in 2009, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future: Twists and Turns and Lessons Learned in 2010. The highest of Fox’s accolades came in 2010 when he was named and an Officer of the Order of Canada.
In 2010, Fox set up The Michael J. Fox Foundation which works to cater for patients of Parkinson's disease as well as coming up with funds through charities for the research on a cure for the disease. The actor is passionate about this project and this is because he has been a patient of the same disease from 1991, in the late 90’s the associated health complications almost brought his career to an early halt.
