Cornell Haynes, Jr. takes up many roles in entertainment from rapping, acting, producing, singing, and song writing. He goes by the professional name Nelly and his predominantly hip hop music career begun in 1993, the artist’s music also blends pop and RnB genres.
Nelly was born on November 2 1974 in Austin, Texas, USA and for the first years of his life he lived in a complete home until the age of 8 when he was left under the guardianship of his mother following a separation of his parents. Coming from a previously comfortable life in Spain that had been financed by his father’s lucrative army job, Nelly and his mother were forced to downscale to a moderate home in the neighbourhoods of St. Louis Missouri.
Here, life was tougher than the young boy had been used to and naivety led him to joining group of teenage gangs that comprised of children and at times adults that were way older than he was. Although this was worrying to his mother, there was nothing that could be done at the time since the now grown up teen lacked a father figure to monitor his ways. In an effort to reconcile Nelly to the previous obedient child that he was relatives that lived in the same state took turns raising him in the hope that a change of scenery would make him realise his wrongdoings.
This was however unsuccessful and Nelly delved deeper into the street life and he abandoned school before graduating. It was while he was on the street that the culture of rap and singing was introduced to him and soon he was hooked to the art. This new found passion along with an active involvement in sports proved to be the things that would turn Nelly from his dark life.
With his own group named St. Lunatics, Nelly began producing demos to songs that he had written by himself. This was however short lived but the fame that he had already enjoyed was enough to attract the attention of executives at the Universal Music Group and in 2000 the label offered the 26 year old a recording deal. Nelly got to work and in the same year he made a solo debut with the studio album titled Country Grammar, featured singles in this production were ‘Ride Wit Me’, ‘E.I’, and ‘Batter Up’ among others.
Country Grammar was rated multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, RIAA and the now established artist followed the debut act with yet another album that was titled Nellyville in 2002. This propelled the artist further into fame and wealth as the hit single ‘Dilemma’, a collaboration with beautiful singer Kelly Rowland became a club favourite.
In 2004 Nelly released two albums titled Sweat and Suit, a four year hiatus was ended with a 2008 album named Brass Knuckles. In 2010, the singer regained his former glory with an album titled 5.0 this production featured the hit single ‘Just A Dream’ which went straight to the top of Billboard charts after the release. Other hit singles in this album are ‘Gone’ and ‘Move That Body’.
