Sarah Michelle Gellar Biography
First time parents and low income earners Arthur Gellar and Rosellen Greenfield had their child, a daughter, on April 14 1977 in New York City, New York, USA, immediately after her birth they named her Sarah Michelle Gellar. This girl turned out to be the popular Hollywood actress behind successful films like 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Gellar got her education from the Fiorello LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts in New York City, since hers was a family in the depths of poverty her parents raised her with the belief that the only way out of economic hardship was through a well-paying white collar job that only came with good grades. Gellar was quite aware of this as the first-hand experience in a life of lacking was enough to raise her awareness and she did not need to be pushed in order to make a good job at school, she was the reigning head of her class from the fast day of admission until the completion of her final year.
All was however not rosy as Gellar faced ridicule and instances of racism due to her family’s low class state and in addition her Jewish background did more to increase bullying and undermining by her peers. The good thing about Gellar’s heritage was that it gave her a distinctive look that was not only captivating but it made many turn around and glance at her for a second time, it was this rare physique that gave her a chance at a showbiz career after a talent scout saw the four year old and was determined to make a star out of her.
In 1981 Gellar made her television debut as a child model for a children’s clothing line, with her pictures in tabloids all over the US she was spotted by a producer and immediately she was offered a role in an upcoming film titled An Invasion of Privacy. Gellar’s first role was well received and the following year she was back on screens with the 1984 film Over the Brooklyn Bridge, her roles in films that decade were limited and she was only seen in two more productions titled Funny Farm and High Stakes in 1988 and 1989 respectively.
At the same time Gellar was venturing into television series and in 1988 she was featured in Spenser: For Hire and Crossbow, these were however guest roles that left Gellar unpopular. With the coming of the 90’s Gellar had a break in film and she continued in television with the roles in A Woman Named Jackie, Swans Crossing Sydney, All My Children, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997. She made a comeback in film in 1997 with her biggest role yet, playing Helen Shivers in the horror teen flick I Know What You Did Last Summer. This movie surged Gellar into stardom and she was highly praised by critics, in the same year she appeared in Scream 2 and had yet another success in 1999 with the film Cruel Intentions.
Gellar is remembered for her roles in Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters in 2002 and 2004 respectively, she appeared in films last in 2009 with roles in Possession and Veronika Decides to Die. In 2011 Gellar will lend her voice in the film American Dad.
