Sean Connery Biography

Thomas Sean Connery is commonly known by the professional name Sean Connery and throughout his successful career in the film industry he has been named a legend and one of the best in the business especially for taking on the lead role in the first sequels of the James Bond films.

Originating from Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, Connery was born on August 25 1930 to Joseph Connery and Euphemia Maclean. Connery’s childhood was lived in poverty as his parents could barely make a living from their odd jobs in local businesses. It is for this reason that as a young boy he was forced to get a job to supplement the family income, this job turned out to be that of a factory worker at a nearby milk factory. When this job became too hard Connery tried his hand at the army and even this did not last long as health complications led to an early discharge in 1950.

Several working stints around his locality led Connery to working at a theatre, it was here that he discovered the power of the stage and soon enough his visits there included acting roles in plays. At the time Connery was aged 20 and with no prior experience in the art he was left to theatre productions even when he longed to appear in films.

This longing was fulfilled when an audition for an upcoming film was accepted and in 1954 Connery made his debut in the film Lilacs in the Spring. This was a low budget uncredited film and so after appearing in it Connery remained relatively unknown to the rest of the world for the next three years. In 1957 he made a big comeback with four films titled No Road Back, Hell Drivers, Action of the Tiger, and Time Lock.

Film credits by the actor in the decade were in Another Time, Another Place, A Night to Remember, Darby O'Gill and the Little People, and Tarzan's Greatest Adventure. In the 1960’s Connery was seen in the films On the Fiddle, Longest Day, Marnie, Woman of Straw, Thunderball, and monde nouveau.

Connery’s career maker came in 1962 when he was cast for the first of the James Bond sequels, he took on the lead role of the same named character in the film Dr. No. this would be the beginning of a trademark that would see Connery honoured by numerous film associations along with being knighted in 2000. He reprised the character role of James Bond in the films You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, Never Say Never Again, and From Russia with Love.

The actor is famous for appearing in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Finding Forrester, First Knight, Rising Sun, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Highlander II: The Quickening, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. After a career that ran for over 50 years, Connery took a permanent break from the film industry in 2006 only to make a comeback in 2010 at the age of 80 to produce the animated film Sir Billi.
