Sophie Dahl Biography

Sophie Holloway was born on September 15 1977 in London, England to an early life that was far from normal, she had to face on many challenges that begun with a lonely childhood and no friends to talk about, often when she made an attempt at getting close to her peers she was uprooted to another state or town, as Julian Holloway, her father, tried to keep up with the demanding schedule of being an actor. At times filming for his roles would go on for months and his family was required to make home wherever work took him. Because of this, young Holloway had no sense of stability and therefore no friends. The situation got worse after a bitter separation by her parents when she was still young.

As if to add more pain Tessa Dahl, her mother thought that Holloway would deal with the situation better if she was enrolled in a boarding school where she could interact with her peers so she enrolled Holloway at the Bedales School in London, England. This turned out to be a bad idea as Holloway became withdrawn and she begun to neglect her health, soon she was diagnosed as a full blown anorexic who risked her life if she did not adopt a healthy eating lifestyle.

Around the same time Sophie stumbled in fame by accident after a stranger who stopped to console the weeping teenager turned out to be an employee of the international Vogue magazine. Through this encounter she was offered a contract to model for the magazine, she took the chance and set off for a career in modelling as Sophie Dahl, a name she had picked from her mother after the separation from her father.

From the mid to late 90’s she established her star among the most famous models in the worlds by attending record shows and photo shoots for established names like Vyes St. Lauren, Italian Vogue, Elle Magazine, American Vogue, British Vogue, Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar, W, Versace, Banana Republic, Alexander McQueen and Visionaire.

Dahl also worked with Gianfranco Ferri, Pirelli and the makers of Opium perfume in the second half of the 90’s decade.

Her modelling career was full of controversies after she appeared almost nude during a showing for a line by Yves St. Lauren. She was also accused of giving a bad image to models after she was cast into the Storm Modelling Agency as an unhealthy woman. Pictures of the model in magazines showed a frail body with protruding bones and even the smallest sized outfits were big on her and they had to be adjusted to smaller sizes over and again so that they could fit.

Dahl comes from generations of actors, actresses and writers spanning over long family lines from both her maternal and paternal sides, because of this vast influence she wanted to be an accomplished writer and actor alongside her modelling career, and this she was able to do. She authored the novel ‘The Man with the Dancing Eyes’ in 2003, ‘Playing with the Grown-Ups’ in 2008 and ‘Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights’ in 2009.

An unsuccessful attempt at acting saw Dahl featured on the low rated and unpopular films ‘Best’ and ‘Mad Cows’.

Her latest book will be on shelves in 2011.
